Energy Meters

Edge reads energy meters in real-time to measure the current load on the grid. Based on these measurements, it continuously adjusts how much power is available for EV charging — compensating for all other loads on site (building, machinery) that Edge does not control directly.

A key strength of Edge is that multiple energy meters can be placed at different points in the system. Each meter guards a specific part of the grid, allowing Edge to protect multiple circuits, sub-grids, or buildings simultaneously — wherever uncontrollable loads exist.

Where to place energy meters

The most common setup is a single meter at the main grid connection, measuring everything in the building including the chargers. Edge uses this to stay within the fuse limit at all times. In this case we refer to the energy meter as Guard, Alternatively we also support configuring an energy meter as Consumer, where the meter 'only' measures the load of the uncontrollable asset. This is not the recommended approach, but it is sometimes easier to install.

GUARD vs CONSUMER energy meter roles

Meters are assigned a GUARD or CONSUMER role in EdgeManager — GUARD protects a fuse limit, CONSUMER provides visibility into a sub-load. See Configure an Energy Meter for configuration details.
